Scripture’s Song

It’s an interesting command, don’t you think? “Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord” (Ephesians 5:19). And it doesn’t take long to find hundreds of other verses in the Bible that instruct us to do the same thing. Consider these “calls to song,” just to name a few:

• “Sing to him, sing praise to him; tell of all his wonderful acts” (1 Chronicles 16:9).
• “Praise him with trumpet sound; praise him with lute and harp! Praise him with tambourine and dance; praise him with strings and pipe!” (Psalm 150:3-4)
• “Sing to the Lord, for he has done glorious things!” (Isaiah 12:5)

Something We Need

It’s pretty easy to understand why God would include verses in the Bible such as “Love the Lord your God with all your heart,” and “Thou shalt not murder,” but why would the Creator of the universe care about people making music? Could it be that the One who knows us best truly does love us most, and knows that participation in music is something we need?
